The Cabinet Office, the government of Japan, has decided to mandate the immediate open access (OA) of research outputs supported by competitive funds to be publicly solicited after FY2025. Focusing on the OA of journal articles written in Japanese, this paper examines the current situation and discusses what authors need to do. This paper consists of seven sections. Section 1 illustrates the background of the open access initiative; Section 2 introduces the related literature; Section 3 shows the outline of the immediate open access policy; Section 4 comments on keywords and key concepts; Section 5 presents a check-list for the authors; Section 6 mentions several problems that might occur in the near future; and Section 7 summarizes the discussion and lists the issues that need to be further considered.

Reason(s) for revision
In the first edition, we interpreted that a rights retention strategy could be activated by publicly posting a preprint on a preprint server under a CC BY license prior to journal submission (see Section 7.3). However, due to insufficient evidence supporting this interpretation, we have comprehensively revised the related descriptions in the second edition to avoid any misunderstandings. Additionally, we have made several minor corrections and additions.License
