Various Issues on Factors hindering Access to Historical Materials with the Case of Yoshiwara Historical Materials

The purpose of this paper is to analyze and discuss the barriers to accessing historical materials related to the history of Yoshiwara that the author has faced in his search for historical materials related to the history of Yoshiwara, and to identify the factors that inhibit access.
Since the 1970s, when Saiken began to attract attention, research on Yoshiwara historical materials has been limited to bibliometric analysis focusing on changes in the form and external type of the historical materials. This type of research is, of course, necessary. However, it is also necessary to read and compare historical materials on the same case and to show the difference between Saiken and Hyobanki. In order to advance such research, we have attempted to obtain various historical materials on Yoshiwara. In the process of obtaining these materials, we encountered several obstacles. Therefore, this paper analyzes and organizes the obstacles to accessing Yoshiwara historical materials, citing several examples of such obstacles and the factors that prevented their access.
Chapter 2 introduces the results of Yoshiwara research and research on Yoshiwara historical materials reported so far, and describes incidents related to the disappearance of historical materials. Chapter 3 discusses the author's search for historical materials at the Taito Ward Office, the Kano Collection of the Tohoku University Library, the Society for the Study of Early Modern Customs, the Iwase Collection, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Archives. As a result, it was found that even public facilities such as university libraries and government offices had lost historical materials. In addition, there were some facilities, such as the National Diet Library, where historical materials existed, but access to them was impeded due to inadequate information. In addition, it was found that the Tokyo Metropolitan Archives and the Iwase Bunko were also hindered by transportation access.
