A Study on The Evaluation System in China's Humanities and Social Sciences: The Role of Citation Index Databases

Indicators such as publication venues and citation counts play an important role in ensuring the quality of academic research and providing an objective evaluation of researchers. Despite various criticisms and concerns, scholarly citation index databases are widely used worldwide. On the other hand, in the evaluation of research in the humanities and social sciences, the development of article citation index databases remains unresolved in many non-English speaking countries. In contrast, China has developed article citation index databases for the humanities and social sciences at an early stage, contributing to the standardization of the university evaluation system. This study investigates the utilization of citation index databases in the evaluation of humanities and social sciences research in China and examines their impact and development.
