Visualizing the relationship between entrepreneurial intention and related factors in entrepreneurship education

An exploratory study of analytical methods using Startup Weekend participants

Abstract

This study empirically examined the process of forming entrepreneurial intentions among university students who participated in the university student version of Startup Weekend (SW), by investigating the relationship between pre- and post-participation psychological variables. Previous studies have identified factors influencing entrepreneurial intentions, such as entrepreneurial attitudes based on the theory of planned behavior, self-efficacy, and subjective norms. However, few studies have controlled for the content and conditions of educational programs to distinguish these factors.

This study collected psychological questionnaires from 90 participants in SW programs for university students held in Kyoto, Tokyo, and Osaka from 2022 to 2024, including pre- and post-program surveys and flow experiences during the program. The relationships between variables were analyzed using multiple regression analysis and covariance structure analysis.

The main results are as follows:

Pre-program entrepreneurial attitudes were the strongest predictor of post-program entrepreneurial intention (path coefficient = 0.80), explaining approximately 70% of the variance in post-program entrepreneurial intention.

Basic personal factors such as self-efficacy and locus of control did not directly increase entrepreneurial intention but indirectly influenced it through entrepreneurial attitudes.

Flow experiences during the program also had a statistically significant effect (path coefficient = 0.11) on post-program entrepreneurial intention.

Methodologically, the study pointed out that multiple regression analysis may fail to capture true relationships due to multicollinearity, and demonstrated the effectiveness of covariance structure analysis, which incorporates the examination of the coefficient of determination in addition to path coefficients.

This study contributes to elucidating the psychological mechanisms underlying short-term PBL-based entrepreneurship education.
