本論文は『自然文字の音声的非効率性』（英語：Phonetic Inefficiency of Organic Scripts：PIOS）の仮説を提案する。この仮説は、自然に発達し、社会文化的要因のみによって形成された書記体系には内在の音声的な制約があると主張し、この制約は『第二言語習得』（英語：Second-Language Acquisition：SLA）の過程に負の影響を及ぼす。具体的に、自然文字の書記素が言語の詳細（音声、韻律的な側面など）を反映しない結果、言語習得過程の決定的な段階において目標言語（L2）の基盤は言語学習者の『発達の最近接領域』（英語：Zone of Proximal Development：ZPD）の範囲外に置かれることを主張する。本論文は言語学習者がPIOSにより生じた困難の克服を支援するために、『言語学的拡張文字』（英語：Linguistically Expanded Scripts：LES）の導入・使用を提案する。さらに、本論文はPIOSおよびLESの概念を定義することにより、その課題に関する実証研究の基礎を構築することを目指す。
