The US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends screening for major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults, including pregnant and postpartum persons, and concludes with moderate certainty that such screening has a moderate net benefit. The USPSTF also concludes that the evidence is insufficient to assess the balance of benefits and harms of screening for suicide risk in adults, including pregnant and postpartum persons. However, it remains unclear whether screening for MDD and suicide risk in adults, including pregnant and postpartum persons, provides a net benefit for the Japanese population, where depression and suicide represent substantial public health burdens.
The Japan Preventive Services Task Force (JPPSTF) commissioned an independent literature review of screening for MDD and suicide risk in adults, including pregnant and postpartum persons.
The JPPSTF concludes with moderate certainty that screening for MDD in adults, including pregnant and postpartum persons, has a moderate net benefit. The JPPSTF concludes that the evidence is insufficient and that the balance of benefits and harms of screening for suicide risk in adults, including pregnant and postpartum persons, cannot be determined.
The JPPSTF recommends screening for MDD in adults, including pregnant and postpartum persons, in Japan, when implemented with adequate systems in place to ensure diagnostic confirmation, effective treatment, and appropriate follow-up (B recommendation; see Pathway to Benefit). The JPPSTF concludes that the evidence is insufficient to assess the balance of benefits and harms of screening for suicide risk in adults, including pregnant and postpartum persons, in Japan (I statement).
