The Ontological Status of the Time Mode in the Four-Mode Theory
A Dual Interpretation Based on Realism and Effective Theory

The Four-Mode Theory describes the universe as an energy redistribution system consisting of four fundamental modes: the Time Mode, the Space Mode, the Dynamics Mode, and the Matter Mode. In previous studies, the author proposed that the Time Mode is the most fundamental mode of the universe and introduced the concepts of the Time-Monad Field and Time Monads as its hypothetical microscopic constituents. However, no direct experimental evidence for the existence of the Time-Monad Field has yet been obtained.
This paper addresses a methodological and philosophical issue concerning the interpretation of the Time Mode within the Four-Mode Theory. While the theoretical framework itself may eventually be developed through the derivation of constitutive laws and quantitative formulations, the ontological status of the Time Mode remains an open question. Should it be regarded as a physically existing entity, or should it instead be interpreted as an effective degree of freedom introduced to describe the behavior and mutual relations of the remaining three modes?
To address this question, this paper proposes a dual interpretation of the Time Mode. Under the realist interpretation, the Time Mode is regarded as a genuine physical mode whose microscopic basis is provided by the hypothetical Time-Monad Field. Under the effective-theoretical interpretation, the Time Mode is understood as an effective degree of freedom appearing in the constitutive relations of the Four-Mode Theory, independent of whether its microscopic origin has been experimentally verified.
The central claim of this paper is that these two interpretations are not mutually exclusive. Rather, they may be regarded as complementary methodological frameworks corresponding to different stages of theoretical and experimental development. Before the Time-Monad Field is supported by compelling theoretical and experimental evidence, the Four-Mode Theory may be interpreted operationally as an effective theory. If future evidence supports the existence of an underlying microscopic temporal structure, the same mathematical framework may be reinterpreted within a realist ontology without altering its core theoretical structure.
The proposed dual interpretation is intended not as a definitive ontological conclusion, but as a methodological framework through which the Four-Mode Theory may continue to develop while remaining open to future theoretical advances and experimental verification.
