個人レベルの探索・深化がイノベーション業績に与える影響
―漫画単行本データの実証研究―

Previous studies have argued that exploration and exploitation have different performance implications. However, evidence of how individual exploration and exploitation are related to innovation performance is still relatively limited. This study predicts that individual relative exploitation is positively related to innovation performance mean and negatively related to innovation performance deviation. The analyses of 4,465 Japanese comic book (tankōbon) data find support for the prediction regarding performance mean. However, to my surprise, the result also shows individual relative exploitation is positively related to performance deviation and individual relative exploration is negatively associated with performance deviation. The result of the additional analysis suggests that unpredicted increased deviation through individual exploitation rather than exploration could be a result of the higher right-hand tail of performance distribution due to the strong effect of individual exploitation. This study contributes to deepening the understanding of the performance implications regarding individual exploration and exploitation, joining the wider effort of microfoundation movement in the literature.
