Abstract: This study investigates how interactions with external networks—categorized into outside organizations, internal upper management, and internal peers—affect the creative performance of business creation teams, utilizing a survey of 561 managers involved in business planning projects. The analysis confirms that overall network diversity significantly enhances creative performance both directly and indirectly through multiple perspective-taking. However, significant differences were observed in the breakdown of external networks. While external organizational contact supports creativity up to a high threshold, influence from internal upper management shows an inverse U-shaped relationship, hindering creativity even at relatively low levels of involvement. Unlike external organizational communication, which focuses on finding new information, skill and perspective, internal communication often centers on alignment with internal policies, control and structural inertia, which may restrict the team's cognitive diversity. The study concludes that while internal integration is necessary for internal resource acquisition, excessive intervention from upper layers can suppress the creative mechanisms essential for innovation.
