Screening for Depression and Suicide Risk in Children and Adolescents: A Draft Recommendation Statement from the Japan Preventive Services Task Force

The US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends screening for major depressive disorder (MDD) in adolescents aged 12 to 18 years and concludes with moderate certainty that such screening has moderate net benefit. The USPSTF also concludes that the evidence is insufficient to assess the balance of benefits and harms of screening for MDD in children 11 years or younger and for screening for suicide risk in children and adolescents. However, whether screening for MDD and suicide risk in children and adolescents has net benefit in the Japanese population, where youth mental health and suicide are major public health concerns, remains unclear.

The Japan Preventive Services Task Force (JPPSTF) commissioned an independent literature review of screening for MDD and suicide risk in children and adolescents and developed these recommendations.

The JPPSTF concludes with moderate certainty that screening for MDD in adolescents aged 12 to 18 years has at least a small net benefit. The JPPSTF concludes that  the evidence is insufficient and the balance of benefits and harms of screening for MDD in children 11 years or younger cannot be determined. The JPPSTF concludes that the evidence is insufficient and the balance of benefits and harms of screening for suicide risk in children and adolescent cannot be determined.

The JPPSTF recommends selectively screening for MDD in adolescents aged 12 to 18 years in Japan (C recommendation).  The JPPSTF concludes that the current evidence is insufficient to assess the balance of  benefits and harms of screening for MDD in children 11 years or younger in Japan (I statement). The JPPSTF concludes that the current evidence is insufficient to assess the balance of benefits and harms of screening for suicide risk in children and adolescents in Japan (I statement).
