Issues in Using Eye-Tracking to Understand the Mechanisms of Nurses' Clinical Judgement

Understanding the cognitive mechanisms underlying nurses’ clinical judgement is an important issue in nursing research because such judgements directly influence nursing practice and the quality of patient care. Previous studies on clinical judgement have primarily focused on differences between novice and expert nurses. These studies have been strongly influenced by Patricia Benner’s novice-to-expert model, which describes qualitative changes in clinical judgement associated with the accumulation of nursing experience. Eye-tracking has also been applied in nursing research as a quantitative method for examining characteristics of clinical judgement, particularly visual attention as a precursor to information processing. The previous studies using eye-tracking have shown that experienced nurses attend to clinically relevant information more selectively and efficiently compared to novices. However, most existing eye-tracking studies have been limited to observational investigations of nurses’ eye movements in response to a limited set of static images, video stimuli, or simulated environments. As a result, the cognitive mechanisms underlying clinical judgement have not yet been sufficiently clarified. Future research should therefore incorporate experimental manipulations of presented stimuli, as commonly employed in psychological research, so as to achieve a more detailed and empirically verifiable understanding of these mechanisms.
