The core of human health resides in the balance of yin and yang, while meridian stagnation and disorder of qi and blood are major triggers of physical discomfort. The essence of self-health care is to restore the human body’s innate capacity for yin-yang harmonization through autonomous regulation. Based on the yin-yang and meridian theories of Huangdi Neijing (The Yellow Emperor's Internal Classic), integrated with modern respiratory physiological mechanisms, and combined with the author’s nearly 60 years of qigong practice experience as well as the independently developed national version of the 2022 New Version of the Acupuncture Bronze Figure (National Copyright Registration No. 2023-A-00076086) meridian model, this paper develops the Excreting the Stale and Absorbing the Fresh Respiration System. With "excreting the stale to purge pathogenic yang and absorbing the fresh to nourish vital yin" as its core tenet, this method guides the natural circulation of qi and blood purely through mental intention without the aid of additional massage, and can automatically clear meridian blockages. Taking the six groups of externally-internally related primary meridians of the hands and feet as its core regulatory targets, it activates the body’s autonomous regulatory ability by modulating respiratory rhythms, thereby unblocking meridians, harmonizing qi and blood, and ultimately achieving human yin-yang balance. The method formulates standardized practice steps, including entering the meditative state, excreting the stale and absorbing the fresh, progressing step by step, correcting deviations and mitigating adverse effects, and closing the exercise to consolidate efficacy, along with clear practice suggestions, applicable populations and operational taboos. Featuring simple operation and no entry barriers for those without meridian-related knowledge, preliminary trials have demonstrated initial positive effects of the method: it has effectively reversed the author’s long-term physical decline and provided a safe and feasible path for daily self-health care for adults, especially the elderly with clear consciousness. Still in the experimental stage, this method will be continuously optimized and improved based on practical feedback. It is for health preservation reference only and shall not replace formal medical treatment. Belonging to the research field of human physiological regulation and complementary health care, this method offers a new practical approach for the study of respiratory regulation in maintaining human psychosomatic homeostasis.
