Economic and location analysis of the ballet industry using night light

Abstract

In recent years, the application of satellites and big data to the economic field has expanded rapidly. In particular, as it has become clear that the intensity of night lights acquired by satellites correlates with social and economic indicators such as each country's gross domestic product, employment, population, and education, a large number of papers have been published using satellite data that includes night lights.
On the other hand, Henderson et al. (2012) note that the Developing countries and some regions are still lagging in terms of development of reliable statistical data by region as well as many of the existing statistical data being not credible.In addition, there has been several issues raised in the past, including potential problems of macroeconomic indicators when making global comparisons of Gross Domestic Product(GDP).In contrast, night lights are used to analyze GDP and the scale of the economy, a single indicator or ruler can be used to compare economic activity across multiple countries.
In this paper, an analysis of the location and distribution of ballet and dance studio, transition of the industry of those, and the environment surrounding of the participation will be made. Additionally, I consider the possibility that the location and distribution of ballet studios are influenced by environmental factors, such as higher night lights intensity, and how these factors might impact economic aspects such as the number of job openings, opportunities, and wages related to ballet.

Author Biography

Shoichi Otomo, Graduate School of Economics, Keio University・Keio Economic Observatory/Faculty of infomatics, Shizuoka University・Institute of Civil Engineering and Informatics/Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Hirosaki University/GEOJACKASS.INC

Born in 1983.
Began my career at the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). Subsequently joined Sony Corporation and Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Inc. as a data scientist.

I have served as a Joint Researcher at Keio University since 2014. I was appointed Visiting Associate Professor at Shizuoka University in 2018 and have concurrently served as Specially Appointed Associate Professor at the same university since 2024. I have also been a Adjunct Instructor at Hirosaki University since 2021.

As of 2025, I am CEO of GEOJACKASS Inc.
I am currently enrolled in the Doctoral Program at the Graduate School of Economics, Keio University.
